THE conviction this week of the cyclist who hit and killed a 17-year-old girl on a pavement in Buckingham should reinforce an understanding of the danger of allowing the relaxation of the laws that prohibit cycling on footpaths.

Those who insist on riding illegally should face prosecution before the danger this poses snowballs further and more people are injured or killed.

The only surprise is that this man was fined rather than facing a charge of manslaughter.

Harrogate's council and police should do all in their power to ensure that cyclists do not endanger pedestrians on footpaths wherever they are – The Stray, pavements, parks etc.
