BECKWITHSHAW'S Charlie Lister has revealed he has stepped down as captain with immediate effect, handing the reins to first-team regular Ben Quick.
Lister has been in the ’Shaw hot seat for three years, his legacy and greatest success being to guide the side back into the Aire-Wharfe top flight at the first attempt in 2006.

Since then the side has strengthened and improved, finishing third in the table last season.

However, after six games without a win, ’Shaw have slipped off their perch at the top of the table and are currently fourth, 12 points adrift of leaders Guiseley.

Their barren spell has convinced Lister to call a premature end to his spell in charge of the first team with the ’keeper deciding to take more of a back-seat role at the club.

“This was always going to be my last season but after not winning the last six games I just decided enough was enough,” he said.

“I haven’t lost the enthusiasm; it’s just with working away a lot I haven’t been able to concentrate 100 per cent on it.”

The former skipper is adamant Quick, who played a pivotal role in their Addison Cup win on Tuesday, will have no problem filling his shoes.

He said: “He has the enthusiasm for the job and he has what it takes to move the club forward. He has the full backing of the boys and everyone here at the club.”

Meanwhile on the pitch Lister has highlighted his team’s next two games as the make-or-break point of their season.

’Shaw will host Division One strugglers Burley tomorrow (1.30pm) before travelling to league leaders Guiseley in eight days’ time, knowing maximum points are required to keep their title challenge alive.

They extended their drought to six games without a win last Saturday following a two-wicket defeat against Otley, and Lister is now calling on his players to pick up 12 vital points.

Lister said: “Burley and Guiseley will be our two most crucial games - if we don’t get maximum points from these games we will be out of contention.

“We started off with a good, competitive total last week, but we didn’t bowl well, and that was a big disappointment.”

Quick hit 86no and Stuart Carey made 30 in a total of 194-9 against Otley, but the West Yorkshire outfit pulled home with two wickets to spare. James Lilley took 3-43 for the visitors.

Meanwhile the club picked up their first trophy of the season on Tuesday night when they beat Bardsey to lift the Addison Cup.

’Shaw’s Evening League captain Andy Newbould expressed his delight at the victory with the side now chasing a magnificent double to round off an excellent season.

“No disrespect to Killinghall when we beat them in the Addison final in 2006 but this one was a much better feeling,” said Newbould.

“I think then we were favourites to win but going into this game, especially with Bardsey’s all-star side, I think we were underdogs so beating them only made it feel sweeter.”

’Shaw are currently top of the Harrogate Evening League Division One table with their skipper desperate to stay there.

“We’re definitely looking to go for the double now,” he added.

“It’s going to be difficult.
